EchoSystem, 2019

Audio-visual collaboration with Lior Ben-Gai

Improvised music often relies on intuition and near-telepathic communication between performers. Echosystem extends this dynamic across media, allowing musicians to treat the visual component as if it were another musical voice. Though algorithmically driven, the visual layer is not at all autonomous — it demands presence, attention, and practice to yield meaningful results.

The visual setup combines a microscope equipped with a webcam, tactile control interfaces, a microphone, and custom software. Live video from the microscope is filtered in real-time through multiple layers of cellular automata, each functioning both as a visual filter and as an audio-responsive system. Some parameters of these layers are modulated by the incoming sound, making the visual instrument highly reactive — capable of expressing subtle motion with surprising fidelity when finely tuned.

Echosystem premiered in April 2019 at the Hateiva Theater in Jaffa, and later featured in the PRINT_SCREEN Festival 2019 as a collaboration with Ensemble Musica Nova.
